Curriculum collections have operated in Australian universities since the 1970s. (1) While they vary in organisation, size, and title and may be located either within the library or the education faculty, they share a common purpose to provide an organised collection of print and non-print items to support the teaching, learning and research interests of education staff and students. These resources enable student teachers to develop professional skills and knowledge required in curriculum planning, and competence in linking theory and practice in curriculum studies. Students also develop proficiency in identifying, evaluating and adapting materials for lesson plans and in the practicum component of the programs. In the context of ongoing transformation of universities and libraries, the impact of technology, and changes in the way students find and use information, can curriculum collections survive and prosper, or will they become obsolete, perceived as no longer offering valuable resources or services? The literature on curriculum collections is scarce and mostly dated. Some of it is cited throughout this article. (2) This study sought to capture a current snapshot of curriculum collections in Australian universities, and to explore the challenges and possible future directions for these specialist collections as perceived by the librarians responsible for them.
