Description
The person Leslie Corbett knew me as was a race fixer and upon spotting me at the Prairie Star Club that evening, her expression was like that, total recall. "You!" she said. "In Wichita?" Leslie's a redhead, her hair is long and beautiful, but she was somewhat overweight and a bit settled looking now, leaning too heavily on cosmetics. She perched her butt on the bar stool next to mine, faced me, tried to just hold the blown away look of a high-school girl, though she was, in fact, twice that age. Leslie and I had once shared a bed for an entire winter up in Edmonton. We were both working at Northlands Park, a smalltime place where you had to be careful about the friends you made. I got lucky there, wound up an agent for a tired old jock named Herb McCauley who was looking to put away a small pot of gold before retiring from the game for good. We had a nice run at Northlands, me and Herb, me and Leslie. Herb did not care about going out with dignity, holding his head high. He wanted a condo down in Arizona, where a couple of his sons were riding.
